Shetland based graphic designer designs Stoura Offshore Wind Farm logo

Shetland based graphic designer Lou Jackson was recently chosen to design a logo for the Stoura Offshore Wind Farm project. Lou proposed three potential logos which were put to a public vote at our recent public exhibition in Lerwick.

The eventual winning design takes inspiration from the circular Viking shields of the annual Up Hella Aa fire festival. https://lnkd.in/e5W6JYkx

Three overlapping letters 'S' (Stoura, Shetland, Scotland) create a central triskelion, an ancient symbol which is found in both Celtic and Norse mythology.

In the Celtic tradition, the triskelion is associated with the sea god Manannán mac Lir, who inspired the flag (and possibly the name) of the Isle of Man. https://lnkd.in/ezBd5sh2

In Norse mythology, the triskelion is linked with Odin, the father of all gods and the creator of humans. Given Odin's links to protection and victory in battle, versions of the Horns of Odin triskelion often feature on Up Helly Aa shields. https://lnkd.in/edCHbHuc

The name Stoura itself is a Shetland Dialect word which is linked to large windy and exposed landmarks. This includes the Stoura Stack which is located in Skerries, a group of islands c. 40 km from the site. This name was selected following a competition amongst all primary schools in Shetland.

We are delighted that both the name and the logo for Stoura Offshore Wind Farm capture the uniquely diverse cultural heritage of Shetland.
